A weekend in Marrakech

With direct flights from many European cities, Marrakech is one of the easiest long-weekend escapes from Europe. Two days are enough to see the essential sights and eat very well — as long as you plan around opening times, crowds and the afternoon heat.

Before you go: three things to book

  1. A riad near Jemaa el-Fna or Bab Doukkala, with an airport pick-up. On a short break, every minute spent looking for your accommodation is lost.
  2. Jardin Majorelle and the YSL Museum — timed tickets sell out in high season; book online before travelling.
  3. One special dinner on a rooftop or in a riad restaurant for your second evening, especially on Friday and Saturday.

Friday evening — arrival

Check in, freshen up and walk to Jemaa el-Fna as the square fills with food stalls, storytellers and musicians. Climb to one of the café terraces around the square to watch the smoke rise at sunset. Eat at the stalls — choose busy ones with posted prices — or at a restaurant on the edge of the square.

Saturday — the medina

Morning (8:30–12:30). Start at the Ben Youssef Madrasa at opening time, when the courtyard is quiet. Nearby, visit the Marrakech Museum or Le Jardin Secret. Then plunge into the souks: dyers', leather, metalwork and spice souks. Browse first; buy later.

Lunch. A rooftop café around the Rahba Kedima (spice square).

Afternoon (14:30–18:00). Walk south to the Bahia Palace — later in the afternoon is calmer than late morning — then to the Mellah and its spice market, and the vast ruins of El Badi Palace, where storks nest on the walls.

Evening. A hammam — either a public one for the local experience, or a spa hammam in a riad or hotel — followed by dinner. Try tangia, the Marrakech speciality, at a small grill near the Mellah or in a restaurant.

Sunday — gardens and the modern city

Morning. Arrive at Jardin Majorelle at your booked slot, as early as possible, and visit the adjacent Yves Saint Laurent Museum. Walk on to Gueliz for coffee and galleries.

Late morning. Taxi to the Saadian Tombs and Bab Agnaou in the Kasbah quarter, then the Koutoubia gardens.

Afternoon. Last shopping — for fixed prices and a sense of quality, visit the Ensemble Artisanal before returning to the souks — then head to the airport. If your flight is late, spend the afternoon by a pool or take a short trip to the Agafay desert for sunset.

If you have a third day

Choose one:

  • Atlas Mountains: the Ourika valley (1 hour) or Imlil (1.5 hours) for village walks and lunch with a mountain view.
  • Agafay Desert: camel ride and dinner in a camp under the stars, 45 minutes from the city.
  • Cooking class: market visit and a hands-on tagine lesson.
  • Essaouira: possible as a day trip, but much better with a night there.

Where to stay for a weekend

  • Riad in the medina — the most atmospheric, and within walking distance of everything in this itinerary.
  • Hivernage or Gueliz hotel — if you prefer a pool, modern comforts and easy taxi access.

Avoid the Palmeraie for a short city break: it is beautiful but 20–30 minutes by car from the medina.

Time-saving tips

  • Visit the main sights at opening time and in the last two hours before closing.
  • Download an offline map and save your riad's location.
  • Carry small notes for taxis, tips and snacks.
  • Politely ignore anyone offering directions or telling you a sight is closed — check for yourself.
  • Allow 30–45 minutes between the medina and the airport, more on Friday evenings.

When to go

October to May has the most pleasant temperatures for walking. Winter weekends are sunny but chilly at night. In summer, plan indoor sights and a pool for the afternoon, and do your walking before 11:00 and after 18:00.
